Solving Stochastic Fixed-Point Equations with High Probability

Jelena Diakonikolas

We study stochastic fixed-point equations $\mathbf{T}(\mathbf{x}) = \mathbf{x}$ over normed spaces $(\mathcal{E}, \|\cdot\|)$, where the operator $\mathbf{T}$ is nonexpansive or contractive and is accessed only through unbiased stochastic evaluations with bounded second central moment. Given $ε> 0, δ\in (0, 1)$, the goal is to output $\mathbf{x} \in \mathcal{E}$ such that $\|\mathbf{T}(\mathbf{x}) - \mathbf{x}\| \leq ε$ with probability at least $1-δ$. We introduce VR-GHAL, a variance-reduced gradual Halpern method for quadratically smoothable Banach spaces. The key algorithmic ingredient is a recursive stochastic estimator based on clipped differences of oracle evaluations: instead of clipping $τ(\mathbf{x}; ξ)$ itself, we clip stochastic differences at the Lipschitz scale $γ\|\mathbf{x} - \mathbf{y}\|$. This makes the estimator pathwise Lipschitz along the algorithmic trajectory while permitting martingale concentration under finite second moments in the native norm. Our main theorem gives an anytime high-probability residual bound: on a single event of probability at least $1 - δ$, the residual decreases nearly geometrically across epochs, up to lower-order logarithmic factors. Under only bounded variance, displaying only the dependence on the target error $ε$ and Lipschitz constant $γ\in (0, 1]$ of $\mathbf{T}$, the resulting oracle complexity is $\min\{ε^{-5}, (1-γ)^{-3}ε^{-2}\}$. Under a Lipschitz-in-expectation oracle, the dependence improves to the corresponding $ε^{-3}$ nonexpansive rate (i.e., for $γ= 1$), and under samplewise nonexpansiveness to $ε^{-2}$.

A Defense of the Quadratic Model

Alexandru Meterez, Pranav Ajit Nair, Depen Morwani, Cengiz Pehlevan, Sham Kakade, Alex Damian

Due to the complexity of neural network loss landscapes, optimization theory is forced to rely on idealized models, and there is generally a tradeoff between how theoretically tractable the model is, and how accurately it describes the true optimization dynamics. In this work, we…

Explicit Iteration Complexity of Exact Data-Driven Inverse Optimization for Integer Linear Programs

Akira Kitaoka

A data-driven inverse optimization problem (DDIOP) is the problem of estimating the objective-function parameters (weights) that explain observed optimal-solution data, and it arises in many applications, including integer linear programming (ILP). It is known that, by applying g…

Convergence analysis of a family of Zermelo-type iterations for the Bradley--Terry model

Ruijian Han, Ding Lu, Yiming Xu

Zermelo's algorithm is a classical method for computing the maximum likelihood estimator in the Bradley--Terry (BT) model, but its convergence can be slow in practice. To accelerate computation, Newman introduced a family of Zermelo-type fixed-point iterations parameterized by $α…

Distributional Determinantal Point Process for Repulsive Clustering of Distributions

Khai Nguyen, Yang Ni, Elizabeth Juarez-Colunga, Peter Mueller

We introduce the distributional determinantal point process (dDPP) as a novel repulsive point process whose atoms are probability distributions rather than points in a real space. The dDPP is constructed via an L-ensemble with a sliced Wasserstein (SW) kernel between distribution…

Differentially Private Nonparametric Modal Learning with Applications to Regression and Clustering

Density modes provide a localized and interpretable summary of multimodal distributions, but their estimation under rigorous differential privacy constraints remains largely unexplored. We study differentially private recovery of density modes for multivariate distributions under…
