This tutorial introduces satellite-based monitoring of coastal water quality and marine ecosystem change using real ocean data from the Copernicus Marine Service and machine learning. Working with three years of daily chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature observations over the Northern Adriatic Sea, we will explore how harmful algal bloom conditions can be detected from space. We will start with exploratory data analysis through classical ML models (Random Forest, Gradient Boosting), progressing to a patch-based convolutional neural network (CNN) that learns spatial patterns in oceanography data. This tutorial is based on ongoing research by the author (Tedi Yankov) pending review for publication.
