Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in industrial control often suffers from lag and overshoot due to purely reactive control based on the current tracking error. To achieve anticipatory control without high computational overhead, we introduce a predictive formulation that augments the DRL state space with target velocities and future reference horizons. Evaluating eight configurations using proximal policy optimization (PPO) on a 1-degree-of-freedom (1-DoF) helicopter testbed, simulation results showed a 9-fold error reduction, lowering the mean absolute deviation from 2.73° to 0.31°. However, zero-shot transfer to physical hardware revealed a sim-to-real gap. Interestingly, a simpler configuration using a single, further look-ahead horizon matched the real-world top performance of the most complex model (1.11°). Overall, evaluating various combinations of prediction horizons and target velocities demonstrated that highly granular predictive data is not necessarily required for physical transfer.
Coordinating autonomous vehicles at unsignalized intersections remains a critical challenge for multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) systems, which typically struggle with combinatorial action spaces, reliance on privileged information, or rigid agent designs. We propose Mas…
Multi-stream robot manipulation policies achieve unparalleled sample efficiency and generalization by modeling actions relative to environmental reference frames. However, existing approaches typically assume these frames to be strictly exogenous. This causal assumption collapses…
Reinforcement Learning (RL) systems are typically trained using a single, well-specified scalar reward function. However, real-world decision-making tasks often involve multiple, competing objectives, such as performance versus efficiency, where ground-truth reward functions are…
Reinforcement learning (RL) post-training of Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models has shown strong promise for robotic manipulation. Among RL methods, critic-based approaches rely on a value estimator that predominantly operates on single-frame observations or single-frame VLM bac…
This paper demonstrates how deep reinforcement learning (DRL) enables adaptive locomotion of snake-like robots in dynamically changing viscous environments, overcoming the inherent performance limitations of classical predefined control methods. The lack of direct onboard sensors…
We present HBPI-UCRL, a model-based algorithm for hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) that learns high-level and low-level policies in parallel. HBPI-UCRL exploits the fact that a high-level transition corresponds to a multi-step transition at the low level. We introduce tw…
