cGAP: Generalized Association Plots with HOMALS-Guided Heatmaps for Visualization of High-Dimensional Categorical Data

High-dimensional categorical data arise in genetics, biomedicine, and the social sciences, yet visualization tools for such data remain far less developed than those for continuous variables. Existing methods either scale poorly, rely heavily on low-dimensional displays detached from the original data matrix, or prioritize predictive accuracy over interpretability. To address this gap, we introduce categorical Generalized Association Plots (cGAP), a visualization framework for nominal, ordinal, and binary data that preserves the original data matrix while augmenting it with interpretable geometric structure. cGAP uses Homogeneity Analysis (HOMALS) to embed subjects and category levels in a three-dimensional Euclidean space and maps the embedding to red-green-blue coordinates so that similar patterns receive similar colors. The framework integrates three coordinated views: a HOMALS-guided heatmap of the raw data matrix, a subject proximity matrix, and a variable proximity matrix. Seriation algorithms are then used to reorder rows and columns to reveal coherent clusters, outliers, and local-to-global structure. We also derive barycentric traceability, projection-distortion, and contrast-preservation properties that clarify how embedding geometry is transferred to the display. We demonstrate the versatility of cGAP through applications to student-animal classification data, mammalian dentition profiles, mushroom records from the UCI Machine Learning Repository, and the Clusters of Orthologous Genes database. These examples show that cGAP supports transparent exploratory analysis by maintaining traceability between derived visual structure and the original categorical observations. cGAP provides a full-matrix, heatmap-based visualization environment for investigating complex categorical datasets across scientific domains.

Distributional Determinantal Point Process for Repulsive Clustering of Distributions

Khai Nguyen, Yang Ni, Elizabeth Juarez-Colunga, Peter Mueller

We introduce the distributional determinantal point process (dDPP) as a novel repulsive point process whose atoms are probability distributions rather than points in a real space. The dDPP is constructed via an L-ensemble with a sliced Wasserstein (SW) kernel between distribution…

The V-fold jackknife for semiparametric inference: variance estimation, confidence intervals, and simultaneous confidence bands

Yi Li, Ashkan Ertefaie, Mark van der Laan

For decades, the bootstrap has been a default tool for statistical inference because of its broad applicability and minimal analytic requirements. Although its validity is well understood for smooth parametric estimators, its theoretical properties for many modern semiparametric…

Differentially Private Nonparametric Modal Learning with Applications to Regression and Clustering

Arkajyoti Bhattacharjee, Arnab Auddy

Density modes provide a localized and interpretable summary of multimodal distributions, but their estimation under rigorous differential privacy constraints remains largely unexplored. We study differentially private recovery of density modes for multivariate distributions under…

Convergence analysis of a family of Zermelo-type iterations for the Bradley--Terry model

Ruijian Han, Ding Lu, Yiming Xu

Zermelo's algorithm is a classical method for computing the maximum likelihood estimator in the Bradley--Terry (BT) model, but its convergence can be slow in practice. To accelerate computation, Newman introduced a family of Zermelo-type fixed-point iterations parameterized by $α…

Longitudinal Random Forests for Sparse and Irregular Response Trajectories

Yangsheng Wang, Xiaotian Dai, Haoda Fu, Guifang Fu

Longitudinal studies often collect data at sparse, irregular, and unequally spaced time points. Such heterogeneity is often driven by subject-specific covariates, yet existing methods have been restricted to a scalar endpoint value, completely neglecting the underlying response t…
