Physically-Constrained Harmonic Separation for Robust Heart and Respiratory Rate Estimation from Wrist Photoplethysmography

Nouhaila Fraihi, Ouassim Karrakchou, Mounir Ghogho

Wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG) enables continuous monitoring of cardiopulmonary physiology, but reliable heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) estimation in free-living conditions remains challenging due to non-stationary motion artifacts that spectrally overlap with physiological dynamics. Existing signal-processing methods degrade under strong motion, while unconstrained deep learning approaches often lack physiological interpretability and identifiable structure. We propose a Physically-Constrained Harmonic Separation (PCHS) framework that formulates HR and RR estimation from wrist PPG as an analysis-by-synthesis problem, where accelerometer measurements condition artifact separation rather than directly regressing vital signs. A physics-guided harmonic generator decomposes the observed signal into quasi-periodic physiological components and a motion-related residual, enabling HR recovery from the fundamental frequency and RR prediction from respiratory-driven modulations of the harmonic parameters. Robust reconstruction objectives, separation constraints, and uncertainty-aware weighting stabilize the decomposition under motion. Experiments on the motion-intensive PPG-DaLiA dataset demonstrate that PCHS outperforms state-of-the-art methods while yielding interpretable signal decompositions that effectively disentangle physiological activity from motion artifacts.

Barzilai-Borwein Fails Superlinear Convergence on an Open Set of Quadratics for Every Dimension $n\geq 4$

Dawei Li, Xiaotian Jiang, Mingyi Hong

Barzilai--Borwein (BB) method has shown strong practical performance in continuous optimization, yet its convergence dynamics remains poorly understood. In particular, a central unresolved question is whether BB converges superlinearly for almost every strictly convex quadratic p…

TriGlue: a Biology-Inspired Generative Model for Generating Molecular Glue-Induced Ternary Complex

Yuliang Yan, Shuo Yan, Haochun Tang, Yiqin Sun, Enyan Dai

Molecular glue degraders have emerged as a promising strategy for targeted protein degradation by inducing ternary complex formation between an E3 ubiquitin ligase and a target protein. Despite their therapeutic potential, computational design of molecular glues remains largely u…

Stable Autoregressive Speech Generation with Low-Frame-Rate High-Dimensional Continuous Tokens

Yi Luo, Rongzhi Gu, Jixun Yao

Balancing sequence length, representational capacity, and long-horizon stability is a central problem in autoregressive (AR) speech and audio generation. Representations with higher frame rates or greater capacity can preserve more signal detail, but they also make streaming gene…

CausalForge: A Formally Grounded, Self-Improving Agentic Framework for Automated Research in Causal Inference

Jiyuan Tan, Vasilis Syrgkanis

Automating theoretical research is constrained not only by the generation of candidate results, but also by their reliable evaluation. A common approach is to close the research loop with a large language model (LLM) reviewer. However, such reviewers remain empirically unreliable…

CalibratedRubric: Task-Adaptive Rubric Banks for Open-Ended LLM Evaluation

Mengting Chen, Yanshu Sun, Wanting Liang, Beidi Luan, Rui Sun, Dezhi Chen, et al.

Reliable evaluation of open-ended LLM outputs requires fine-grained rubrics, yet expert curation is costly and difficult to scale. Existing automated pipelines rely on strict judge unanimity and binary variance filters, which cannot distinguish measurable rubrics from informative…
