Racing Toward Intelligence: How Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Robotics Enhance Performance Prediction, Strategic Decision-Making, and Return on Investment in Formula One and NASCAR

Dr. Rachel J.C. Fu, Michael B. Reid

This article examines how artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robotics are transforming two elite motorsports series - Formula One and NASCAR - from historical, operational, and strategic perspectives. The article reviews the historical development of auto racing and the transition from mechanical competition to intelligent racing systems. It analyzes the application of predictive technologies in race operations, including vehicle performance optimization, environmental forecasting, and modeling of driver behavior. Comparative analyses evaluate strengths and opportunities across both racing platforms. The article explores future return on investment (ROI), industry impact, and broader implications for intelligent mobility and business innovation. The findings suggest that auto racing increasingly serves as a laboratory for future transportation systems, advanced manufacturing, operational analytics, and human–machine collaboration. Success in next-generation racing will depend not solely on speed, but on an organization’s ability to convert information into intelligent decisions and measurable value creation.
